Lost U.S. Passport

No matter how much we plan and how safe we are, accidents are bound to happen.  We encourage all students to keep their passports in safe places at all times, especially if traveling or moving prior to program departure.

In the United States

Contact the nearest Passport Agency. Normally, you may not be able to schedule an appointment last minute. In most cases, exceptions are made for individuals in a "pinch" and appointments are then made.  If an appointment cannot be made, you are usually told to arrive at the Agency early in the morning.  This will allow you time to explain your situation and complete all the necessary documentation.

Abroad

Contact the local authorities to file a police report as soon as you notice that your passport is missing.  Next, you will need to contact the in-country U.S. embassy to apply for a new passport.  Try to gather as much paperwork and information as you can prior to arriving to the embassy (i.e. passport copy, visa copy, IDs, acceptance letter, ID photos, etc.). A color copy of your passport is stored in the the GoAbroad Portal within your application.

Feel free to contact the UGA Education Abroad staff for additional assistance in locating copies of documents (i.e. passport copy, acceptance letter).
